St Cuthbert’s Day (TRIH ep 34)
685 · Resource
This special episode of The Rest Is History is devoted to St Cuthbert. Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook discuss Cuthbert’s seventh-century life in Northumbria, his asceticism, the miracles attributed to him in the hagiographic tradition (healing, control of wind, communion with animals) and his connection to Lindisfarne and St Aidan. They cite early sources, notably Bede’s life of Cuthbert, and consider how saints’ lives blend personal memory and hagiographic formula.
