The Real Downton Abbey (TRIH ep 300)
1912 · Resource
This episode of The Rest Is History features hosts Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook interviewing historian Lucy Lethbridge about her book Servants: A Downstairs View of 20th Century Britain. The conversation contrasts popular depictions of servant life (notably Downton Abbey) with primary sources and memoirs, highlighting the hierarchy, long hours, gendered nature and often harsh physical labour of domestic service.
