Iran: England - 'The Little Satan' (TRIH ep 259)
1979 · Resource
In this episode hosts Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook speak with historian Ali Ansari about the long, ambivalent history of Anglo–Iranian relations. Framed by England v Iran in the World Cup, the conversation traces contacts from early diplomatic exchanges through the 17th–19th century Persianate context and the East India Company, to 19th-century admiration of British institutions and the rising disappointment that followed.
