Charles V rules ‘an empire where the sun never set’

The Habsburg Charles V rules as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Spain, and lord of the Netherlands, Austria and Spanish America — the first empire said never to see the sun set. He fought France and the Ottomans, confronted Luther at Worms, and abdicated in 1556, splitting the inheritance between his son Philip II and his brother Ferdinand.
