Rif War
1921–1926 · Event
Abd el-Krim's Rif Republic humiliates Spain from 1921 and, after attacking French Morocco in 1925, draws in France; a joint Franco-Spanish force of hundreds of thousands, with Spain using chemical weapons, crushes the rebellion in 1926. Franco and the Africanistas made their names here.
