The Goeben escapes to Constantinople

Two German warships outrun the Royal Navy across the Mediterranean and steam up the Dardanelles, where Germany 'sells' them to neutral Turkey — crews, fezzes and all. The gift tilts the Ottoman Empire toward the Central Powers and, as Churchill later wrote, brought 'more slaughter than any ship in history'.
