The Goeben escapes to Constantinople

Two German warships outrun the Royal Navy across the Mediterranean and steam up the Dardanelles, where Germany 'sells' them to neutral Turkey — crews, fezzes and all. The gift tilts the Ottoman Empire toward the Central Powers and, as Churchill later wrote, brought 'more slaughter, more misery, and more ruin than has ever before been borne within the compass of a ship'.
