Five hundred bombers work over Coventry for eleven hours, gutting the medieval cathedral and the city's centre and killing 568 people — the concentrated raid that gives the Germans a new verb, coventrieren. The ruined cathedral is left standing beside its post-war successor as a monument to reconciliation.
