After two weeks of ferocious fighting, the republic of Tlaxcala — the Aztecs' bitterest unconquered enemy — switches from fighting the strangers to arming them. The conquest becomes what it remains to the end: an indigenous coalition war against Tenochtitlan, with Spaniards at the spearpoint.
