In torchlit squares across university Germany, students burn tens of thousands of 'un-German' books — Mann, Freud, Einstein, Remarque — with Goebbels presiding in Berlin. A century earlier Heine had written the sentence everyone now quotes: where they burn books, they will in the end burn people.
