Jinnah dies a year into Pakistan

The Quaid-e-Azam — who had hidden his tuberculosis through the negotiations, and whom Mountbatten later claimed he would have stalled past had he known — dies thirteen months after founding his state. Pakistan begins its history without the one authority who could bind it.
