The Republic takes a provincial capital in a blizzard to forestall Franco's next offensive — and loses it back ten weeks later, along with 60,000 men and much of its best equipment, in cold that froze rifles and amputated feet. The last Republican offensive but one, and the war's cruellest battlefield.
