Battle of Nördlingen turns the tide

A combined Habsburg and Spanish army destroys the main Swedish field army in Bavaria — 12,000 dead, the Protestant cause in the south broken. It is the defeat that forces France off the sidelines and into the war directly; the Swedish moment is over, but the killing is not.
