Battle of Nördlingen turns the tide

A combined Habsburg and Spanish army destroys the main Swedish field army in Bavaria — some 12,000 to 14,000 men killed, wounded or captured, the Protestant cause in the south broken. It is the defeat that forces France off the sidelines and into the war directly; the Swedish moment is over, but the killing is not.
