In one day the IRA kills Lord Mountbatten — the Queen's cousin — with a bomb on his boat in Sligo, and 18 British soldiers in a double ambush at Warrenpoint, the army's worst loss of the conflict. The message is that no target is beyond reach; the government's response hardens accordingly.
