Three weeks after the Restoration is proclaimed, shogunal forces march on Kyoto to reverse it — and are beaten outside the city by a smaller Satsuma-Choshu army flying the imperial banner. The shogun flees to Edo by sea; the Boshin War is decided almost at its start.
