Sonthonax abolishes slavery in Saint-Domingue

With the colony collapsing and Spain and Britain circling, the French commissioner Sonthonax proclaims general emancipation to rally the insurgent slaves to the Republic — abolition decreed on the ground, months before Paris ratifies it. Toussaint and his army come over to France within the year.
