Blue-helmeted troops of the UN Emergency Force arrive in Egypt to supervise the ceasefire and the Anglo-French withdrawal — the United Nations' first armed peacekeeping mission, improvised in days by Canada's Lester Pearson, who wins the Nobel Peace Prize for it. Every blue-helmet mission since descends from this one.
