Eden resigns, broken by Suez

His health wrecked and his authority destroyed by the fiasco and the lie to Parliament, Anthony Eden resigns after twenty months as prime minister — the shortest peacetime premiership of the century to that point. Harold Macmillan, who had urged the invasion and then the retreat, succeeds him.
