A little-known cleric named Ruhollah Khomeini denounces the Shah's reforms and his ties to America and Israel — and his arrest brings crowds into the streets of Qom, Tehran and Mashhad. Troops open fire; the dead number in the tens or hundreds. The 15 Khordad uprising fails, but the revolution has found its leader fifteen years early.
