On the holy day of Ashura, the largest crowds in Iranian history fill Tehran demanding the Shah go and Khomeini return — a march so vast the army simply watches. Soldiers begin deserting to the crowds; the regime is visibly finished, and the Shah's foreign friends start saying so.
