On a road north of Naples, Garibaldi meets Victor Emmanuel, hails him as King of Italy, and hands over everything the Thousand conquered — half the peninsula, surrendered by a revolutionary to a monarch for the sake of unity. He refuses every honour offered and goes home to his island farm with a bag of seed corn.
