For failing to procure the divorce, the butcher's son who ran England for fifteen years is stripped of the chancellorship and his palaces in a matter of weeks. Arrested for treason the following year, he dies on the road to his trial — 'had I but served God as diligently as I have served the king, He would not have given me over in my grey hairs.'
