The Gregory clause
1847 · Event
A clause in the Poor Law demands that no one holding more than a quarter-acre of land receive relief — so the starving must surrender their holdings to eat. Landlords use it to clear estates wholesale; hundreds of thousands are levelled out of their cabins, and the famine becomes an eviction as well as a hunger.
