For thirty-five years Porfirio Díaz gives Mexico railways, foreign investment and order — and rigged elections, debt peonage and land stripped from villages into vast haciendas. 'Poor Mexico,' runs the line credited to him: 'so far from God, so close to the United States.' The revolution is the bill for the order.
