Five months after the Federal Republic, the Soviet zone answers with the German Democratic Republic — people's democracy in name, SED dictatorship in practice, with Moscow's men from exile in charge. Germany's division, improvised in 1945 and hardened by the blockade, now has two flags, and will keep them for forty years.
