Pripyat is evacuated

Thirty-six hours after the explosion, 1,200 buses empty the plant's model town of 49,000 people in three and a half hours. Residents are told to bring papers and food for three days; the Ferris wheel due to open on May Day never takes a paying passenger, and nobody ever moves back.
