Winter Storm fails to reach the pocket

Manstein's relief drive claws to within 30 miles of the encircled Sixth Army — whose 250,000 men are living on Göring's broken promise of supply by air — and is stopped. Paulus, forbidden to break out, holds his positions; from Christmas 1942 the pocket is simply starving, and everyone in it knows how this ends.
