To secure the Suez Canal and the bondholders behind it, a British army crushes Egypt's nationalist movement at Tel el-Kebir in twenty minutes before dawn — beginning a 'temporary' occupation that lasts seventy-four years. France, which declined to join, spends the rest of the century seeking compensation elsewhere in Africa: the Scramble's starting gun.
