In the hungry winter after a failed harvest, the Eburones under Ambiorix lure fifteen cohorts out of their camp with a promise of safe passage and annihilate them — the worst Roman defeat of the entire war. Caesar's vengeance is the tribe's effective extermination; Ambiorix vanishes across the Rhine and is never caught.
