Battle of Ashdown

871 · Event

In the 'year of battles' — nine engagements in twelve months — the 21-year-old prince Alfred, charging 'like a wild boar' while his brother the king lingered at prayer, breaks the Viking line on the Berkshire downs. The victory is fleeting, but by April the brother is dead and the boar is King of Wessex.
