Alfred's answer to the next invasion is a network of some thirty fortified towns, none more than a day's march apart, garrisoned by rota and paid for by a systematic land-tax — with a standing field army and new ships to match. When the Vikings return in force in the 890s, the system simply absorbs them: the raiders' England is closed.
