Plague deaths peak at seven thousand a week

In the September heat the Bills of Mortality record over 7,000 plague deaths in a single week — the true figure higher, as the poor go uncounted. The court has fled to Oxford, grass grows in the streets, and the dead-carts work by night. 'Little noise heard day or night,' Pepys writes, 'but tolling of bells.'
