When Christ and his saints slept

1137 · Event

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle's entry for these years is the most famous description of anarchy in English: barons building unlicensed castles and filling them 'with devils and evil men', torturing for gold, till 'men said openly that Christ slept, and his saints'. In the power vacuum, every local strongman becomes a law unto himself.
