Winged Victory of Samothrace

A marble Nike alights on a ship's prow, robes whipped by a sea wind that stopped blowing two thousand years ago. Carved for a Samothracian sanctuary to mark a naval victory, found in fragments in 1863, and mounted at the head of the Louvre's Daru staircase — where it remains one of the most theatrical placements of any object in any museum.
