Cupid lands on a rock and gathers the unconscious Psyche into an embrace of impossible marble tenderness — wings, drapery and interlocking arms cut from a single unforgiving block. Canova was Europe's most famous artist when he carved it; Neoclassicism has no more loved object, and the Louvre no more photographed kiss.
