The Elgin Marbles arrive in London

The last shipment of the Parthenon sculptures — stripped from the temple by Lord Elgin's agents under a disputed Ottoman permit — reaches England, where Parliament will buy them for the British Museum in 1816. Keats writes a sonnet; Byron writes a denunciation; and the argument over where they belong has now outlasted the empire that took them.
