Two clothed men picnic with a nude woman who looks straight back at the viewer — no goddess, no alibi. Rejected by the official Salon and hung instead at the Salon des Refusés, where crowds came to jeer, it made scandal itself a modern artistic strategy and marked the ground where Impressionism would grow.
