Gormley's Angel of the North

A 20-metre steel figure with the wingspan of a jumbo jet spreads its arms over the A1 at Gateshead, planted on the site of a colliery's pithead baths. Derided in advance and beloved within a year, Antony Gormley's rust-coloured angel proved public sculpture could still mark a region's identity — 90,000 people pass it every day.
