Handel's Water Music premieres on the Thames

George I processes up the Thames by barge while fifty musicians on a second barge play suites Handel has written for the occasion — and the king likes them so much he demands the hour of music played three times over. It is the Baroque's most famous outdoor event, and the sound of English royal ceremony ever since.
