La Scala opens in Milan

Built in two years to replace a burned-down theatre, on the site of the church whose name it takes, the Teatro alla Scala opens with an opera by Salieri. It becomes the stage every composer must conquer — Verdi's house, Puccini's proving ground, Toscanini's kingdom — and its opening-night audience remains the most feared in music.
