La Scala opens in Milan

Built in two years on the site of a burned-down theatre and named for the church it displaced, the Teatro alla Scala opens with an opera by Salieri. It becomes the stage every composer must conquer — Verdi's house, Puccini's proving ground, Toscanini's kingdom — and its opening-night audience remains the most feared in music.
