Impresario Robert Newman and a young conductor named Henry Wood open a season of cheap 'promenade' concerts at the Queen's Hall, letting anyone stand for a shilling and hear an orchestra. The formula — serious music, informal crowd — outlives the hall itself (bombed in 1941) and grows into the world's largest classical festival, ending each September in the flag-waving of the Last Night.
