Cortés defeats the Narváez expedition

Cuba sends nineteen ships to arrest Cortés; he night-marches to the coast, routs the much larger force, and recruits it — returning to Tenochtitlan with his army tripled. But the deputy he left behind, Alvarado, has massacred the festival crowd in his absence, and the city is in arms.
