Cortés launches his lake fleet

Thirteen brigantines — built in Tlaxcala, carried in pieces over the mountains by eight thousand porters, and assembled on a canal dug for the purpose — take Lake Texcoco from the Mexica canoes. Tenochtitlan's causeways, aqueduct and food canoes can now be cut; the siege begins in earnest.
