Dragged along on the march to Honduras as too dangerous to leave behind, the last Aztec emperor — tortured after the city's fall to reveal treasure that never existed — is hanged from a ceiba tree on an accusation of conspiracy even Cortés's own men disbelieved. Mexico still argues over where he lies.
