Leading some 40,000 men over the Hellespont, Alexander hurls a spear into the shore of Asia and claims the continent as 'spear-won land' — then detours to Troy to lay a wreath at Achilles' tomb. The propaganda and the ambition are announced together; he never sees Macedon again.
