Fleeing east after Gaugamela, the last Achaemenid Great King is deposed and stabbed by his own satrap Bessus and left dying in a wagon for Alexander to find. Alexander buries him royally and hunts Bessus down as a regicide — conqueror recast, usefully, as avenger and heir.
