Hong Xiuquan declares himself Christ's brother

After failing the imperial examinations a fourth time, a Guangzhou village teacher rereads a Christian missionary tract and recognises the visions of his breakdown six years earlier: he is the younger brother of Jesus, sent to sweep the demon Qing from China. From this conviction will come a war that kills some twenty million people.
