Taiping northern expedition

1853–1855 · Event

From their new capital at Nanjing the Taiping send an army north to finish the Qing — and it gets within a hundred miles of Beijing before winter, overstretched supply lines and Mongol cavalry destroy it. The dynasty survives its closest brush with collapse; the war settles into a decade of attrition.
