Mangal Pandey fires the first shot

At Barrackpore, a sepoy of the 34th Native Infantry fires on his British officers, inflamed — like the whole Bengal Army — by rifle cartridges rumoured to be greased with cow and pig fat, defiling Hindu and Muslim alike. Pandey is hanged within days; six weeks later the army he belonged to rises.
