Delhi proclaims the last Mughal emperor

The Meerut mutineers ride through the night to Delhi and hail the 81-year-old poet-king Bahadur Shah Zafar — a Company pensioner with no army of his own — as Emperor of Hindustan. Overnight a soldiers' mutiny becomes a rebellion with a cause and a capital, and every eye in India turns to Delhi.
