Alcibiades defects to Sparta

415 BCE · Event

Recalled from the Sicilian armada to stand trial for sacrilege, the most brilliant and least trustworthy man in Athens defects to the enemy instead — and tells Sparta exactly how to beat his own city: fortify Decelea, send a general to Syracuse. No single Athenian does Athens more damage; within years he will change sides again.
